The Warmglow is fitted with an Oxygen Depletion System (ODS) — a built-in safety sensor that automatically shuts off the gas if oxygen levels in the room fall too low. This makes it suitable for ventilated indoor spaces such as homes and offices, and it meets UK standards for indoor portable gas heating.
Adequate ventilation is still essential. Do not use the heater in a sealed room, sleeping area, or any space where fresh air cannot circulate. When LPG does not combust completely it produces carbon monoxide (CO), an odourless gas that is dangerous even at low concentrations. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm in any room where a gas heater is used regularly. Never leave the heater running unattended or overnight.
The Warmglow has three heat settings from 1.5kW to 4.1kW. Butane contains approximately 13.7 kWh per kg, so run-times at maximum output are:
- **7kg butane** (~96 kWh): approx. 24 hours at maximum heat — around 12 days at 2 hours per day
- **13kg butane** (~178 kWh): approx. 44 hours at maximum heat — around 22 days at 2 hours per day
Running at a lower setting extends these figures significantly. Eastern Gases stocks both the 7kg and 13kg Flogas butane cylinders with free delivery across London.
Butane gas loses pressure in cold temperatures — below about 5°C the gas does not vaporise effectively, which reduces the flame and can cause the heater to cut out. This is a property of butane, not a fault with the heater. If you are using the Warmglow in a cold garage, unheated outbuilding, or in winter temperatures, bring the cylinder indoors to room temperature for an hour before use — do not apply direct heat to the cylinder.
The Warmglow is designed for indoor and sheltered use; if the space you are heating regularly drops well below 5°C, the heater is not suited to that environment regardless of the cylinder temperature.
Yes, provided there is adequate ventilation — the same rules that apply indoors apply in a garage or workshop. The Warmglow's built-in Oxygen Depletion System (ODS) will cut off the gas automatically if oxygen levels fall too low, but a poorly ventilated enclosed space can accumulate carbon monoxide before the ODS triggers. Ensure there is a source of fresh air — a gap under the door, an open window, or ventilation bricks in the wall — and fit a carbon monoxide alarm. A well-ventilated garage or workshop is a suitable environment for the Warmglow; a completely sealed space is not.
Bear in mind that garages are often cold enough in winter for butane vaporisation to become an issue (see the cold weather question above). Bringing the cylinder inside beforehand is especially important in an unheated garage in winter.
